Thriller films often involve mostly male actors as their preference for a leading role but there are many famous thriller movies that beg to differ with this choice. Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred
Hitchcock……Who???
A thriller could be a novel,
play, or movie with an exciting plot, typically involving crime or espionage or
a person, thing, or experience that thrills. Thrillers heavily stimulate the
viewer's moods such as a high level of anticipation,
ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety, suspense, excitement, tension, and terror.
The first thriller movie
created was by Alfred Hitchcock (‘Safety Last’ 1923). This involved a young
all-American boy doing a daredevil stunt off the side of a skyscraper. Alfred
Hitchcock is considered as the founding forefather of the thriller genre. In
1926 Hitchcock made his early silent thriller film ‘The Lodger’, a suspenseful
Jack-the-Ripper story-based movie, which received remarkable responses, leading
it to become nominated as one of the top 10 movies of its time.
Hitchcock also made the thriller
movie ‘Psycho’, which is an all-time classical thriller movie, building up
suspense and a huge adrenaline rush. The 1960’s American launched Hitchcock’s
career into the top spot of the best thriller movie director of his time.

What is a Thriller
What
is a Thriller...Hmm???
An example of a classic
thriller is the German thriller ‘M’, involving a child killer. This movie was
based on a real life killer named Peter Kurten (known as the ‘vampire of
Dusseldorf’). Examples of modern day thrillers would be ‘Paranormal activity’
or ‘Scream’.
The plot line of a genuine
normal thriller is one that builds up the tension, which usually arises when
the character(s) is placed in threatening circumstances, escaping seems impossible.
Life is endangered, usually because the main character is unintentionally or
unknowingly involved in a dangerous or deadly situation. Plots of thrillers
involve characters, which come into conflict with each other, or with outside
forces.
The
location in most thrillers creates an atmosphere of danger
and violence, such as crime and murder. Thrillers often present the world and
society as dark, corrupt and hazardous.
Characters
include criminals, stalkers,
assassins,
innocent victims (often on the run), menaced women, characters with deep dark pasts,
psychotic
individuals, terrorists, cops
and escaped prisoners.
